Hepatoprotective activity of Saraca indica leaves extract against CCl4-induced liver damage in rats
The present study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of Saraca indica leaves against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage in rats. Induction of hepatotoxicity was produced by intraperitoneal injection of CCl4 and olive oil solution (1:1). The rats treated with the ethanolic extract of Saraca indica leaves at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg p.o. daily. A standard treated group received silymarin at 50 mg/kg for comparison. The higher dose 400 mg/kg significantly reduced serum levels of SGPT, SGOT, ALP, total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin compared to the untreated CCl4 control group. Histopathological analysis of liver tissue further supported these findings, showing a dose-dependent reduction in liver necrosis in Saraca indica extract treated groups. These results suggest that Saraca indica possesses significant hepatoprotective activity.
